How to Take the Wegovy Pill: Water, Timing, Doses and Missed Pills

The Wegovy pill's label directions: first thing in the morning before eating, no more than half a cup of water, a half-hour wait, the 1.5 mg to 25 mg dose steps, what the label says about staying on a low dose, taking it at night, every other day and missed tablets.

The Wegovy pill is a once-a-day morning tablet. You take it before breakfast, swallow it intact with a small glass of water (half a cup, 4 ounces, is the most the label allows), and then hold off on food, other drinks and your other pills for at least half an hour.[1] Over the first three months the strength climbs a step each month, 1.5 mg, then 4 mg, then 9 mg, before settling at 25 mg.[1] Those rules exist because very little of the tablet is absorbed, and food in the stomach can cut that to almost nothing.[2]

About this article. The directions, dose schedule and missed-dose rule are quoted or summarized from the Wegovy prescribing information and Medication Guide on DailyMed (revised June 2026), read on October 31, 2026. The reasons behind the rules come from the label’s pharmacology section and the published dosing-conditions study it draws on. Questions the label does not answer, such as evening dosing, are marked as such.

The daily routine, from the label

“Take one WEGOVY tablet orally once daily on an empty stomach in the morning with water (up to 4 ounces). Do not take WEGOVY tablets with other liquids besides water. Swallow tablets whole. Do not split, crush, chew or dissolve in any solution. Do not take more than one tablet per day. After taking a WEGOVY tablet, wait at least 30 minutes before eating food, drinking beverages or taking other oral medications.”
— Wegovy prescribing information, section 2.1

In practice that comes down to six habits:[1]

  1. First thing in the morning, before food. The label says to take the tablet “on an empty stomach in the morning.”[1]
  2. Water only, up to 4 ounces. That is half a cup. Coffee, tea, juice and sparkling drinks do not count; the label says not to take it “with other liquids besides water.”[1] Coffee after the wait is covered in coffee on a GLP-1.
  3. Swallow it whole. No splitting, crushing, chewing, or dissolving it in anything.[1]
  4. Give it half an hour. Breakfast, coffee and the rest of your morning pills all come after that.[1]
  5. One tablet a day at most. The label says so directly.[1]
  6. Keep the bottle closed and dry. Tablets stay in the original bottle until you take one, at room temperature; the Medication Guide says not to store them in any other container.[1] That rules out a pill organizer. The temperature range is in GLP-1 storage out of the fridge.

Why the rules are so strict

Semaglutide is a peptide, and the stomach normally digests peptides. Novo Nordisk pairs it in the tablet with SNAC, a compound that helps it cross the stomach lining, which is where the label says most of the uptake happens. Even so, only about 1% to 2% of the semaglutide in a tablet reaches the bloodstream.[1] Anything else in the stomach competes with that small window.

The dosing-conditions study shows how much. Healthy volunteers who ate a meal 30 minutes before the tablet had “limited or no measurable semaglutide exposure.” In a second trial, the amount of water (50 or 120 mL) made no difference, but absorption rose the longer people waited before eating.[2] The label reports the same pattern, and adds that 240 mL of water (8 ounces) gave lower absorption than 50 mL.[1] So 4 ounces is a ceiling, not a target, and 30 minutes is a minimum. Waiting longer than 30 minutes is consistent with the study; it is not a label instruction.

The dose schedule

Wegovy tablets: recommended dosing for weight reduction or cardiovascular risk reduction in adults (label Table 2)
DaysOnce-daily doseStage
1 to 301.5 mgStarting dose
31 to 604 mgDose escalation
61 to 909 mgDose escalation
91 onward25 mgMaintenance

Each bottle holds 30 tablets of one strength, so each step is one bottle.[1] The label says the slow climb is there to reduce the risk of stomach side effects; how often each one happened in the trial is in Wegovy pill side effects. In the 64-week trial behind the approval, people on the 25 mg tablet lost 13.6% of their body weight on average, against 2.4% on placebo in the label’s analysis.[1] The published trial report gives 13.6% against 2.2%.[3]

Staying on a lower Wegovy pill dose

The label treats 1.5 mg, 4 mg and 9 mg as steps on the way to 25 mg, and 25 mg is the only maintenance dose it names for the tablet.[1] It does allow a pause: if a dose is not tolerated during the climb, the label says to “consider delaying dosage escalation.” It sets no limit on how long that delay can last. If 25 mg itself is not tolerated, the label’s suggestion is not a lower tablet dose but a switch to the Wegovy injection at 1.7 mg once weekly.[1]

So staying at 4 mg or 9 mg for the long term is something a prescriber can decide, but it is outside the dosing the label recommends, and the 64-week weight-loss result was measured at 25 mg.[1] Price is part of this question for many people. How the self-pay price changes by strength is in what the Wegovy pill costs, and how the tablet’s steps line up against the pen’s is in is the pill as good as the shot.

Can you take the Wegovy pill at night?

The label says to take it in the morning, and it gives no evening alternative.[1] The water and fasting experiments it describes were run after an 8-hour overnight fast.[1] An evening dose would need the same conditions: an empty stomach and no food or drink for at least 30 minutes afterward. The fed-state result in the dosing study, where a meal shortly before the tablet left little or no drug absorbed, is why taking it after dinner is a poor fit.[2] If your sleep schedule makes mornings impossible, such as with night shifts, ask your prescriber how to apply the label’s conditions to your day rather than moving the tablet on your own.

Foundayo, Lilly’s daily GLP-1 tablet, works differently: its label lets you take it at any meal or none.[4] For anyone whose routine cannot fit the Wegovy rules, that difference is covered in our Foundayo explainer.

Missed doses and every other day

Forgot a morning? The label’s answer is to let that tablet go and carry on as normal tomorrow.[1] Doubling up is not allowed; the limit is one tablet a day. The label gives a rule for restarting the injection after two or more missed weekly doses, but it gives no comparable rule for how many missed tablets would call for starting the climb again. If you have been off the tablet for more than a few days, ask before going straight back to 25 mg. Semaglutide’s week-long half-life means levels fall gradually rather than overnight, as set out in how long GLP-1s stay in your system.

There is no every-other-day schedule on the label. Taking the tablet every second day amounts to missing half of the labeled doses, and the trial results were measured with daily dosing.[1] If the reason is side effects, the label’s answer is to slow the climb; if it is cost, see the price guide above.

Other medicines, and switching to or from the shot

Anything else you swallow waits until the 30 minutes are up.[1] The tablet can also change how much of some other drugs is absorbed. In the label’s interaction study, levothyroxine exposure rose 33% when taken with the semaglutide tablet, and the label asks prescribers to monitor medicines that need close dosing.[1] If you take a thyroid pill in the morning, raise the timing with your prescriber.

Switching is spelled out. Someone moving off the 2.4 mg weekly shot waits a week after their final injection, then begins the 25 mg tablet. Going the other way, the first 2.4 mg injection is due one day after the final 25 mg tablet.[1] Novo Nordisk’s other semaglutide tablets, Rybelsus and Ozempic tablets, are diabetes products with their own strengths, explained in Ozempic tablets explained.

Common questions

Frequently Asked Questions

Once a day, in the morning, before you have eaten. Swallow the tablet whole with a small amount of plain water, half a cup at most, and leave half an hour before breakfast, coffee or any other medicine. Never more than one tablet in a day.
The label names 25 mg as the only maintenance dose and treats 1.5, 4 and 9 mg as escalation steps. It allows delaying the next step if a dose is not tolerated, and suggests switching to the 1.7 mg injection if 25 mg is not tolerated. Staying on a lower tablet dose long term is a prescriber's decision outside the label's recommended dosing.
The label specifies the morning and has no evening option. Its absorption work was done after an overnight fast, and a meal shortly before the tablet leaves very little drug absorbed. If your hours make mornings impossible, work out a schedule with your prescriber.
Let it go and take your usual tablet tomorrow morning. Two in one day is never allowed. After several days off, ask your prescriber if you should restart lower.
The label has no every-other-day schedule. It is a once-daily tablet, and the trial results were measured with daily dosing. Taking it every second day is the same as missing every other dose.
Not with the tablet, and not for half an hour afterward. Plain water is the only drink the label allows with the dose, and coffee can follow once the 30 minutes are up.
