How Long Can Zepbound, Wegovy and Ozempic Be Out of the Fridge?
How long each brand-name GLP-1 can stay unrefrigerated, from the storage section of its FDA label: Zepbound and Mounjaro 21 or 30 days by device, Wegovy 28 or 56, Ozempic 56, Saxenda 30, and the Wegovy pill never refrigerated. Plus freezing, expiry and compounded vials.
A Zepbound or Mounjaro single-dose pen or vial can spend 21 days in total outside the fridge, provided it never gets warmer than 86°F.[1][2] A Wegovy single-dose pen gets 28 days between 46°F and 86°F, as long as the cap is still on.[3] An Ozempic pen that has been used once can stay at room temperature for 56 days, and an opened Saxenda pen for 30.[4][5] The Wegovy pill is never refrigerated at all.[3] Every one of these labels says the same thing about freezing: a frozen dose is a dose you throw away.
Every brand-name GLP-1, out of the fridge
“Room temperature” on these labels has a ceiling of 86°F (30°C) in every case. Above that the allowance does not apply, however many days are left. The clock also counts total time out, so two separate weekends on the counter add together.
| Product and device | Before use | Time allowed out of the fridge | Temperature limit |
|---|---|---|---|
| Zepbound single-dose pen or single-dose vial | Refrigerate, 36°F to 46°F | Up to a total of 21 days, then discard | 86°F ceiling |
| Zepbound KwikPen or multi-dose vial, unopened | Refrigerate; good to the expiration date if kept cold | Throw away after 30 days at room temperature | 86°F ceiling |
| Zepbound KwikPen or multi-dose vial, opened | Fridge or room temperature | Throw away after a total of 30 days at room temperature, 30 days after first use, or after 4 weekly doses, whichever comes first | 86°F ceiling |
| Mounjaro, all four devices | Same as Zepbound | Same as Zepbound: 21 days single-dose, 30 days multi-dose | 86°F ceiling |
| Wegovy single-dose pen or syringe | Refrigerate | Up to 28 days, only before the cap is removed | Between 46°F and 86°F |
| Wegovy FlexTouch pen (four 2.4 mg doses) | Refrigerate until first use | 56 days after first use, at room temperature or in the fridge | Between 59°F and 86°F |
| Ozempic pen | Refrigerate until first use; good to the expiration date if kept cold | 56 days after first use, at room temperature or in the fridge | Between 59°F and 86°F |
| Ozempic prefilled syringe | Refrigerate | Up to 28 days | Between 46°F and 86°F |
| Saxenda pen | Refrigerate until first use | 30 days after first use, at room temperature or in the fridge | Between 59°F and 86°F |
| Wegovy tablets | Room temperature, in the original bottle | No refrigeration at any point | 68°F to 77°F, brief swings between 59°F and 86°F allowed |
| Foundayo tablets | Room temperature | No refrigeration at any point | 68°F to 77°F, brief swings between 59°F and 86°F allowed |
Two patterns are easy to miss. Lilly’s single-dose pens and vials have a shorter window (21 days) than its four-dose KwikPen and multi-dose vial (30 days).[1] Novo Nordisk’s single-dose Wegovy pen has a condition the others lack: the 28 days apply “prior to the pen or syringe cap removal.”[3] Once the cap is off, the dose is meant to be used.
Zepbound and Mounjaro: 21 days or 30, depending on the device
Zepbound and Mounjaro are both tirzepatide, made by Lilly, and their storage sections read the same. The single-dose pen and the single-dose vial belong in the refrigerator at 36°F to 46°F. The label then gives the room-temperature allowance in one sentence:
“If needed, each single-dose pen or single-dose vial can be stored unrefrigerated at temperatures not to exceed 30°C (86°F) for up to a total of 21 days.”— Zepbound prescribing information, section 16.2
The words “a total of” matter. If a pen spent four days in a bag on a trip and then went back in the fridge, those four days are spent. The label does not say the pen may go back into the fridge, and it does not say it may not. What it fixes is the total: after 21 days out, the pen or vial is discarded.[1] An opened single-dose vial goes in the bin after the one dose it holds, even if liquid is left over.[1]
The KwikPen and the multi-dose vial each hold four weekly doses. Unopened and refrigerated, either lasts to the printed expiration date. Unopened at room temperature, either is thrown away after 30 days. Once opened, it can live in the fridge or out of it, and it is thrown away at the earliest of three points: 30 days at room temperature in total, 30 days after first use, or four weekly doses taken.[1][2] For most people the fourth dose comes first. If you are moving between devices, the guide to Zepbound vials and syringes sets out how each one is used.
Wegovy, Ozempic and Saxenda
Novo Nordisk’s labels add a refrigerator instruction the Lilly labels do not: do not store the pen “directly adjacent to the refrigerator cooling element.”[3] The back wall of a fridge can freeze what touches it, and a pen frozen by accident is as unusable as one left in a freezer.
- Wegovy single-dose pen or syringe: refrigerated, or out of the fridge for as long as 28 days while the cap is still on, no colder than 46°F and no warmer than 86°F, and kept in its carton until the injection.[3] The Medication Guide lists four reasons to throw one away: it has been frozen, it has been exposed to light or to temperatures above 86°F, it has been out of the refrigerator for 28 days or longer, or it has been used.[3]
- Wegovy FlexTouch: the newer four-dose pen. Refrigerated until first use, then 56 days in the fridge or at room temperature (between 59°F and 86°F), with the needle taken off between doses.[3]
- Ozempic pen: refrigerated until first use, then 56 days at room temperature or in the fridge.[4] An unused pen is good until its printed expiration date only if it stayed refrigerated.[4]
- Ozempic prefilled syringe: refrigerated, or as long as 28 days outside it, between 46°F and 86°F.[4]
- Saxenda: refrigerated until first use, then 30 days at room temperature or in the fridge, protected from “excessive heat and sunlight.”[5]
The Wegovy pill and Foundayo never go in the fridge
Wegovy tablets are kept at ordinary room temperature, 68 to 77°F, and the label tolerates brief swings anywhere from 59 to 86°F. The threat to them is moisture rather than heat: the label says to keep them in the original bottle in a dry place, and the Medication Guide says not to move them into any other container.[3] That rules out a weekly pill organizer. Foundayo has the same room-temperature range and no refrigeration instruction.[6] The daily routine the Wegovy tablet needs is set out in how to take the Wegovy pill.
If it froze, overheated or sat out too long
The labels leave little room for judgment here. Zepbound’s tells you never to freeze it and never to inject a dose that has frozen.[1] Wegovy’s says not to use it if it has been frozen and to discard a single-dose pen exposed to temperatures above 86°F.[3] Thawing a frozen pen does not restore it, and refrigerating a pen that overheated does not either. Before every injection the labels also ask you to look at the liquid: Zepbound should be clear and colorless to slightly yellow, with no particles.[1]
When a shipment arrives warm, the problem is the same but the evidence is in the box. Our guides to checking a GLP-1 that arrives by mail and to which sellers say how they ship cover what to photograph and what to ask for.
Does semaglutide expire?
Yes, in two ways. Every pen and vial carries a printed expiration date, and that date holds only while the product stays refrigerated. Ozempic’s instructions say unused pens “may be used until the expiration date” printed on the label “if kept in the refrigerator.”[4] The second clock starts when it leaves the fridge or is first used, and it is the shorter one: 28 days for a Wegovy single-dose pen, 56 days for an opened Ozempic pen. Whichever date comes first is the one that counts.
Traveling with a pen
None of these labels addresses flights, coolers or customs. What they give you is the temperature range and the number of days, and travel planning follows from those. A single-dose Zepbound pen can make a two-week trip without a cooler if the bag stays under 86°F, and the days count against its 21. A Wegovy single-dose pen gets 28. A hot parked car and a cold checked bag are the usual ways a pen leaves its range. Write down the date each pen came out. The storage and travel cheat sheet fits these figures on one screen, and travel and time zones covers moving your injection day.
Compounded vials follow the pharmacy’s date
A compounded semaglutide or tirzepatide vial has no FDA label, so none of the windows above apply to it. It carries a beyond-use date assigned by the pharmacy that made it, and the storage line on its label is the pharmacy’s instruction, not a manufacturer’s tested limit. Those dates are usually far shorter than a branded pen’s expiration date, and the reasons are set out in what is in a compounded GLP-1 vial. The beyond-use date tracker counts the days for you from the date on your vial.
