What is GLP-1 + anesthesia (preoperative)?
The American Society of Anesthesiologists' 2023 guidance recommended holding daily GLP-1s for a day and weekly ones for a week before anesthesia, because delayed gastric emptying raises aspiration risk.
The 2024 update is less rigid — no strict hold required if NPO for 18 hours or more and clinical judgment supports proceeding. Endoscopy patients on a GLP-1 show roughly 6× the rate of retained gastric contents. ⚠ Tell the anesthetist, every time.
