Saxenda Alternatives Compared
Weekly instead of daily, and average weight loss generally runs ahead of liraglutide
Wegovy mimics the GLP-1 hormone to signal fullness to the brain, slow stomach emptying, and reduce overall caloric intake.
Both from Novo Nordisk, both for weight management, and Saxenda is the older drug in every sense. Liraglutide's ~13-hour half-life forces daily injection where semaglutide's ~7 days allows weekly. Wegovy has SELECT and its MACE −20%; Saxenda has no dedicated obesity outcomes trial, only LEADER's −13% at a diabetes dose. The commercial gap is stark — $349–$499 through NovoCare against roughly $1,400 retail with no comparable cash program. There are few arguments left for Saxenda.

Zepbound works through tirzepatide's dual GIP/GLP-1 mechanism to reduce appetite through both central brain signals and peripheral metabolic effects.
A daily liraglutide injection against a weekly dual agonist, and there is not much contest on either axis a buyer cares about. Zepbound runs $349–$499 through LillyDirect. Saxenda has no cash-pay tier of its own and lists near $1,400. Saxenda's residual argument is availability — it has been on the market since 2014 and is sometimes covered where newer drugs are excluded, which is a formulary fact rather than a clinical one.

Bupropion stimulates hypothalamic pro-opiomelanocortin (POMC) neurons, which release alpha-MSH to reduce appetite, but POMC neurons also release beta-endorphin, which feeds back onto mu-opioid receptors on the POMC neurons themselves and shuts them off — limiting the appetite-suppressing effect.
Contrave's FDA approval was supported by four pivotal 56-week phase 3 trials in the Contrave Obesity Research (COR) program.
Another oral combination outside the class, also injection-free
Qsymia combines two mechanisms in a single capsule.
In the pivotal EQUIP trial (Allison et al.
